Brain and Behavior

As kids and even now in college we are told to "School first" and "Stay focused" whether it is on school work or the important things to you, but for me it was sports. Medhi Ordikhani-Seyedlar states in his TED talk that is near impossible to stay focused on one thing at a time and how the Human brain is based on how we pay attention to certain things. When paying attention there are two types, overt attention, and covert attention. Medhi says that overt attention is paying attention to something by moving your eyes to that something in order to pay attention to it and that covert attention is not moving your eyes, but still being able to focus on it.
This video makes me realize that while in a classroom there are so many things to get distracted by and you don't understand that until you watch this video. It also made me understand why I have trouble focusing on things in everyday life. Wanting to be a Gamewarden this made me feel that the saying "keep your head on a swivel" is not always so literal.

  1. It is interesting how something that we believe is no minor in our lives can be so complex in its explanation and uses. I believe that attention is something people take for granted and that focusing is not necessarily tuning things out, but rather keying in on the important information being given to us. I look forward to reading more of your blogs in the future.
